We’re looking at replacing my wife’s aging 2-door Cavalier with something that is a bit easier to get the child seat in/out. I hadn’t considered a 4-door Cavalier, but this one seems pretty clean:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Only 75,000 km, if the ad is to be believed. Is the Cobalt/Cruze much better?

Haven’t been in a Chevy compact, but I will say that based on appearance, the Cruze will be a much better choice. Just look at the difference in interiors.

Don't know what your budget is, but I would think that just about any other compact in that price range would be better. The early-mid 2000s were not a good period for GM cars.

I had a 2001 cavalier sedan. Utter shit.

Cobalts are subject to that huge ignition switch recall, IIRC. The one that has killed tons of people.

I had a cavalier sedan (‘02) for years. Got it used, a year old, then put over 235K miles on it and it kept trucking. I don’t have kids, but I did use that little car to haul all sorts of stuff and getting all of it into/out of the back seat was never a problem. I’ve got a brand new fiesta now that has three recalls on it and makes me miss that supposedly POS cavalier some days.

I’ve been in a Cruze once. It was a nice enough car, but I don’t know if you can get one for that price. *shrugs*

Cruze>>>>>>Cobalt>Cavalier. The Cavalier was designed as a basic car designed to just run. The Cruze was designed to be an actual competitor in its class.

Why limit yourself to those choices? Plenty of better choices.

Point well taken. At the same time, we don’t need anything fancy.

My wife currently has a two-door Cavalier. For the bad rap they have, they really are durable little cars. The only reason we are looking at anything different is it is getting difficult to get the car seat in/out as our little one keeps getting bigger.

Our budget is pretty flexible. It's just not too often a person sees an 11 year old car with 75,000 km on it going for that cheap.

Typed out long reply, but Kinja’d.

We aren’t limiting to just those. They just seem to be in a similar class.

The base rental spec cruze is second worst car I have ever driven. It’s completely gutless and probably the most uncomfortable seats in any car currently on the market.

Have you considered anything outside of the bowtie? Surely you can get something decent for 4000 CAD.

Oh, most certainly! It’s just that this seemed like a rather interesting find - a surprisingly low mileage car for its age and price.

While $4000 does open up several possibilities, this one’s a contender. Those old Cavaliers are cockroaches: pretty tough, easy to repair, cheap parts, still decent on gas. Looks like it could be a 1-owner old-person (dealer serviced?), 75,000km is very low for a 2004.

It is probably the cleanest cavalier in all of Canada, which puts it in pretty good running for cleanest cavalier in the world.

Well thats what the cobalt and cavalier are. And if you know the problem areas for cavaliers i would stick with what you know. Though even as a GM guy i wouldnt touch one.
